NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION
G.O.O.D. Kids Inc. (Growth Over Odds & Doubts) is a non profit organization designed to promote the sport of grassroots basketball and offer mentoring, educational assistance, advanced fundamental basketball skills and basketball conditioning for youth ages 4-18 in Columbia, SC area. We offer each youth the goal to seek their maximum development in basketball to provide an opportunity for an athletic scholarships that can further their education after high school. We promote good sportsmanship, team play and the discipline of the game to develop self confidence.
GOOD Kids began in 2008 when CEO, Robert Wylie and CFO, Anthony Timmons were both assistant coaches for an AAU 14 & under boys basketball league, SC Elite. They realized that most AAU basketball teams consisted of players that were only picked to benefit the teams interest and no one worked on areas that each player lacked in. They started working with boys through out the school year to help them develop higher in their basketball skills. Once the skill work began, their desire to reach out to more young men grew deeper. These young men got better at skill level, conditioning, confidence and attitude.
In 2009 Robert and Anthony devoted every Saturday and began a free basketball skills workout, Elite Skills Camp, for any youth who desired to become better at basketball. The City Parks and Recreation volunteered a free place for the workouts at Greenview Park Gymnasium. The workouts involved 12-18 year old young men who practiced ball handling, shooting and conditioning exercises for 2 hours. Most of the young men who attended the workouts were talented but was labeled as disadvantaged, underprivileged or mentally challenged related to trouble in school, their behavior or being raised in a low income area by a single parent.
Robert and Anthony teamed up as mentors with a mentoring program, Concerned Black Men, to young men in Richland School District One enrolled at Olympia Learning Center. Through the success of the free workouts and building relationships through the mentoring program, they decided to start a organization that would promote the exposure of young male talent in the Carolina’s on a national level. In 2009 GOOD Sports, LLC became the foundation for several other programs. Team Good began in January 2010 with over 13 players who traveled nationally to compete in basketball tournaments. ”Man-Up“ also began in January of 2010 where they mentored to young males in low income communities.
GOOD Kids services are limited from not having a stationary place of business, however; through Richland School District One, the Olympia Learning Center has allowed this organization to provide a low cost basketball summer camp, Elite Skills Camp, in order to raise funding. They currently have over 30 participants who are male and female. By 2011, Good Kids mission is to seek funding to provide a permanent place of business, a free basketball league and growth in mentoring program. By 2013, Good Kids goal is to have the largest Community Center in North Columbia area that will provide sports programs(basketball, boxing, fitness, self defense) and community programs(mentoring, gang prevention, job skill, GED classes).
GOOD Kids will be a positive, structured environment for young men and use athletics for teaching life lessons, education and academic achievements, personal development, self image, goal setting and hard work to help them develop self discipline, dedication and confidence. This environment will also be an outreach to young males and women, giving them a place to come and stay off the streets.
